An interesting question was recently sent to us via Best Self Defense Weapons Mailbag. The email reads, “Which is more important in a fight between strength vs stamina?”
Strength vs Stamina – Answers From Martial Arts Experts and Online Sources
Based on answers I gathered from online sources and interviews with the people who are martial arts practitioners, the answer would depend on what kind of fight is being referred to.
If you are fighting in a sporting event, stamina usually plays a very important role. This is specially true if you and your opponent are evenly matched in strength. You will be needing every inch of your stamina to last every round and absorb every punishment given to your body.
On the other hand, if you are in a self defense situation, fights there rarely last a minute. A melee fight in the street would only last several seconds (an average of five to ten seconds only). Usually, a split-second decision or event would determine whether you will survive or not in serious cases.
In this event, strength coupled with technique will surely come more handy because your goal is to knock down or incapacitate your opponent in the shortest amount of time possible. However, if you choose to run away from your attacker, then stamina would definitely play a more important part.
Train Your Stamina Followed by Building Up Your Strength
Personally, I would advise balancing the two starting with a stamina training followed by strength training. It should be noted that training for strength in the gym usually involves repeated lifting, pushing or pulling heavy equipment. Without enough stamina, you will only tire yourself easily and you will not be able to maximize your training. In other words, you will not be able to achieve your goals in this situation. So, balance the two elements to provide yourself significant advantage in a fight whether it is a sporting event or self defense in the streets.
